Gas piping for a water heater, range, fireplace, or outdoor kitchen has to be sized correctly for the total BTU load of everything connected to that line, pressure-tested before it's put into service, and inspected before it's covered up or the appliance goes live. Undersized piping is a common issue on additions, where a new appliance gets tied into an existing line that wasn't sized with the extra load in mind.
We test every gas connection, new and existing, for leaks before signing off on a job, using a pressure test rather than just a soap-bubble check on visible fittings.
We also test and re-certify existing gas connections during unrelated plumbing work when a customer requests it, since a routine pressure test on an older connection can catch a slow leak well before it produces a noticeable smell, particularly on a fitting that hasn't been disturbed in years.

Gas piping sizing, material, and testing follow the National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54) as adopted into the plumbing and mechanical code used in Colorado, and any suspected gas leak should be treated as a call-the-gas-company-and-evacuate situation first, service call second.
